Plan Before Production

Release and Upgrade Readiness Guide

Turn release notes into a controlled assessment, test plan, communication package, and go-live decision.

Outcome

Turn release notes into a controlled assessment, test plan, communication package, and go-live decision.

1. Triage the release

  • Classify each item by module, affected persona, automatic activation, optional enablement, and business risk.
  • Ignore marketing volume; prioritize changes that alter calculations, access, workflow, mobile behavior, or integrations.

2. Assess tenant impact

  • Map each relevant feature to current configuration and custom processes.
  • Identify deprecated behavior, required setup, known issues, and dependencies.
  • Assign an owner and disposition: test, enable later, monitor, or no impact.

3. Execute regression testing

  • Retest critical punch, timecard, schedule, accrual, leave, attendance, security, reporting, and integration workflows.
  • Use production-like profiles and employee scenarios.
  • Capture evidence for pass, fail, and accepted limitation.

4. Prepare production controls

  • Schedule deployment and validation windows.
  • Document rollback, workarounds, support scripts, and executive escalation.
  • Communicate only user-visible changes and required actions.

5. Validate after release

  • Confirm login, navigation, punches, calculations, approvals, integrations, reports, and mobile behavior.
  • Monitor exception volume, failed jobs, support contacts, and manager complaints.
  • Close the release only after owners accept results.

Go/no-go standard

Do not proceed when payroll-critical rules, security, employee population, or integration reconciliation remain unvalidated. Every open item needs a named risk owner, workaround, and closure date.
